(Taken from Matrixowners.com last group buy for referance only) The UNICHIP is essentially an additional computer (ECU-bis) installed in a car, by definition it harbors some of the functions of the stock ECU (such as: cold-start control, temperature corrections, etc.) .The Unichip is a fully programmable engine management system which channels over 53,000 optimized fuel and ignition parameters through a vehicle's standard Engine Control Unit (ECU) to deliver maximum power, optimized drivability, and improved fuel economy. Unichip is a Piggyback ECU, which works in harmony with the standard ECU and is compatible with OBD1 and OBD2 vehicles. The Unichip has 256 RPM sites between 500 RPM redline and 208 load sites between zero throttle position and wide-open throttle position. This equates to 53,248 possible adjustments for fuel and a further 53,248 adjustments for ignition timing. On modified vehicles, the Unichip allows the tuner to tune the injection and fuel maps so the full performance potential of the "performance" parts are realized. If the Unichip's ignition and fuel maps are "registered" with zeros (000000), the car operates under stock parameters. For every point on the scale of RPMs vs the Load, the tuner can readjust (retard or advance) the ignition and set the mixture to rich and/or lean (all of this in real time on a running engine) until a desired effect is achieved. It is also unnecessary to fine tune the entire map. The chip can actually approximate the values of the points found between the set values. Furthermore, the Unichip changes the signals of cam location/placement and the loads imposed on the engine. The newest models can (in addition to the stuff above) control boost pressure, water injection and nitro injection. Their parameters pertain to additional tables activated if and only if they are actually needed! The UNICHIP can introduce a nitro cut-off at specific RPMs and control the water and/or nitro-injections over a customizable RPM range. Unichip's key features: 1- modifications of tweakble fuel maps - in real time 2- modifications of a tweakable ignition map - in real time 3- the fuel and ignition maps divide into: 3a- a neutral-gear map, 3b- a full-throttle map 3c- an intermediate throttle positions map 4- wastegate control, boot pressure control 5- variable valve timing & lift engagement/range control 6- additional nitro, water injection control (separate maps) 6a- additional fuel injectors control (up to 4 extra injectors) 7- removal of the rev-limiter or change of its RPM location 8- removal of the speed governor 9- rescaling of the electronic speed gauge (following a wheels swap) 10- an upgrade of VAF, MAF equipped vehicles to full MAP sensor status 11- turbo launch control (a.k.a. - a variable RPM limiter for the clutch control) 12- removal of alternator load (specific conditions) The Unichip PnP units in the US are currently offered for: "Available Kits" Acura RSX (2002+), Honda Civic (2001+), Porsche 996 3.4L (1999-2001), Porsche 996 3.6L (2002+), Porsche 996 TT (2001+), Toyota Matrix XR (2002+), Toyota Matrix S/C XR (2002+), Toyota Matrix XRS (2002+), Toyota Corolla CE/S/LE (2003+), Mini Cooper S (2002+), Subaru WRX (2002+), Subaru WRX Sti (2004), Acura CL (2001-2003), Toyota Tundra 3.4L, 4.7L (1999+), Toyota Tacoma 3.4L (1999+), Ford F-Series 7.3L Power Stroke TD (1999-2003+) Ford F-Series Super Duty 6.0L Power Stroke TD (2003+), Chevrolet Silverado Super Duty 6.6L TD (2001+), Dodge Ram 2500/3500 5.9L TD (1997+) "Coming Soon" Honda S2000 (2000+), Acura TL (2004), Mazda RX8 (2003+), Mazda 3 (2004+), Mazda 6 (2003+) "Most Probably Available" (Please call Jack to confirm) Pontiac Vibe (2003+), Pontiac Vibe GT (2003+), Pontiac Vibe S/C (2003+) CEL Problems? Possibly this will help... in all other cases you might be dealing with a faulty harness. POWERCUT "1" = power supplied to the OE ECU, POWERCUT "0" = power cut from the OE ECU. In the case of the Matrix (and most probably the Corolla, perhaps all current-model Toyotas) the OE ECU has TWO (not ONE) power supplies. There is a back-up battery and also the power supplied from the ignition. The POWERCUT switch is still there ONLY to "kill" the power coming from the backup power supply but should never be set in the "0" position when we turn the ignition. THE IGNITION MUST BE OFF (AT ALL TIMES) IF THE POWERCUT SWITCH IS IN THE "0" POSITION. Thus if you are still having trouble running the car without CELs (both B and A maps, only the B map, etc.) try this: 1. Turn off your ignition and pull your key out 2. Disconnect the battery at the negative terminal. 3. Turn the "Power Cut" switch to the OFF (really powercut=on) position "0" 4. Wait 5-10 (at best 15 minutes - this is the so-called "hard reset") 5. Turn the "Power Cut" switch to the ON (really powercut=off) position "1" 6. Reconnect the negative terminal. 7. Turn on the ignition. Hopefully (it worked for me) this should results in "zero CELs", restart upon restart, over and over again - no CELs thus far. Some of the people who initially had problems with the B map might try to run their cars with this map using this method... otherwise switch to A (I see no need to stress the B map) and enjoy (if all goes well) CEL-free operation. In all other cases the directions quoted by blumatrix03 should be sufficient to clear CELs. The bottom line - run the car (with the Unichip) with the powercut cable switch set to "1"... otherwise you are artificially cutting the power from the stock ECU, it jerks and reboots (in ms) power off of the source supplied via the ignition - this caused the forum-mentioned error (Loss of KAM Power: Open Circuit failure) and makes perfect sense (I've studied the PDF provided by Zoltiz). I hope this helps solve the CEL problem... I told you guys that it must have been bogus (in most cases). Boy... what a difference over running the chip with the powercut set to "0". PS - The previous GB is currently closed but (as far as I know) Jack is always open for more and I would be pleased to assist with another one (if a new group of members interested in the Unichip decides to save about $100 plus a free re-tune per customer).
